Bacteria Biofilm is a Major Barrier to Wound Healing

The normal bacteria on our skin are part of our microbiome, or healthy bacteria that lives in and on our bodies, protecting us against germs. It may come as a surprise but there is a fierce ongoing battle on our skin between good bacteria such as Staphylococcus epidermidis and bad dangerous bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus. Recent scientific research has shown that the good bacteria on our skin produces natural antibiotics against S. aureus inhibiting their growth and ability to cause infections and delay wound healing. Once Staphylococcus aureus and other bacteria invade the skin they set up an alien outpost with protective walls called a biofilm consisting of polymerized sugars called polysaccharides, proteins and bacterial DNA. The biofilm not only protects these invading bad bacteria from the fighting capabilities of the host immune, but this adhesive biofilm also provide structure to this alien colony. The biofilm delays wound healing which the bad bacteria do not want; the longer there is a wound the longer the bacteria have a place to evade the body’s defenses and multiply.
